Myofascial Release & Trigger Point Therapy
Myofascial Release is a form of soft tissue therapy intended to provide pain relief, increase range of motion and balance the body. Techniques include manual massage for stretching the fascia and releasing bonds between fascia, muscles and bones are applied.
Fascia is the densely woven soft tissue component of the connective tissue. It covers every muscle, bone, nerve, artery, vein, providing support and protection for these structures within the human body. This soft tissue can become restricted due to disease, overuse, accident, injury or even inactivity, often resulting in pain, muscle tension, and corresponding diminished blood flow. Although the fascia and its corresponding muscle are the main targets of Myofascial Release, other connective tissues may be affected as well.
Myofascial Release is the process of applying pressure and stretching soft tissue. It is a safe and very effective hands-on technique that involves applying gentle sustained pressure into the Myofascial connective tissue, to release tension, reduce swelling eliminate pain and restore motion.
During one-on-one therapy sessions, therapists use a multitude of Myofascial Release techniques and movement therapy. This helps to promote proper body mechanics and movement, enhanced muscle strength, improved flexibility, leading to better posture and movement.
Trigger points are commonly known as the muscle knots you feel in your back, arms, neck, shoulders and legs, can be Locked trigger points cause tenderness and tightness in the knotted area, resulting in pain, limited range of motion and twitch response, which is similar to a muscle spasm. Trigger points, while generally affecting localized muscle fibers, can also “trigger” pain in multiple areas of the body
The pain caused by tight fascia and trigger points can be treated through the application of Myofascial Release Therapy. This begins with identifying trigger points and resolving them. Fascia surrounding the muscles is also treated to help elongate them back into their natural range of motion and length, to prevent the re-occurrence of trigger points.
